![]() ![]() Behind the scenes however, a shadowy cabal made up of high-ranking members of both nations is secretly plotting to reopen the gateway to the Shadow Realm and restore the old reign of the Wizard Kings. The other Wizard Kings who weren't taken and survived the conflict eventually lost their phenomenal, cosmic power, and became regular Joes once again - save for Merlin himself, who became a crazy hobo after his girlfriend dumped him (yes, really).Ĭut to AoW3, the events from Shadow Magic are now ancient history, and Athla is divided into 2 major nations - the Elven Court, led by the Elves (duh), and the Commonwealth, led by the Humans - and it's not long before they're at each others' throats. Which unfortunately left all the Wizard Kings who had been previously captured by the Shadow Demons trapped there (don't feel bad for them, they're cunts). This is only a temporary victory however, and so in order to ensure the Demons can never return to Athla, Merlin destroys the gateway to the Shadow Realm. ![]() Anyway, they then proceed to invade Athla (the world of the mainline Age of Wonders series) and attempt to take it over.Īfter a long and grueling campaign culminating in the single hardest mission I've ever played in a strategy game, Merlin, the leader of the Wizard Kings and protagonist from AoW2, defeats the Shadow Demons and manages to push them back to the Shadow Realm. In Shadow Magic, it turns out the Wizard Kings' particular brand of magic attracted the attention of a race of beings called Shadow Demons - an insectoid, alien-like species from a dimension called the Shadow Realm (some times referred to as the void), think of them as dimension-hopping locusts. They are however most definitely not gods, and that's important to keep in mind going forward. In AoW2, we're introduced to the Wizard Kings - a group of incredibly powerful magic users, so powerful that some races even perceive them as gods and worship them as such. ![]()
